    More than half.

That is the proportion of service business web enquiries that arrive outside standard Monday to Friday working hours, based on analysis of contact form submissions, website chat interactions, and social media DMs across service business sectors. The exact figure varies by industry and audience, but consistently sits between 50% and 65% for consumer-facing service businesses.

The reason is straightforward. The customers of most service businesses are themselves employed during the day. They research providers, fill in contact forms, and send messages in the evenings and at weekends, when they have the time and the headspace to do it.

A service business operating 9 to 5 is unavailable for the majority of the hours when its customers are actively looking.

The commercial implication for a specific business:

A boiler repair and heating company generates 38 enquiries per month. If 58% arrive outside working hours: 22 enquiries landing in an unmanned inbox overnight or over the weekend. These 22 receive a response the following working day, on average 12 hours after submission.

At a 12-hour response, conversion research suggests these leads convert at roughly a quarter of the rate of same-hour responses. Applied to this business: at the normal 32% conversion rate, these 22 would yield 7 jobs. At the delayed rate, they yield fewer than 2.

The difference: 5 additional jobs per month if those out-of-hours enquiries were handled in real time. At an average job value of £420: £2,100/month. Annually: £25,200.

This is not a theoretical case. The enquiries exist. The customers submitted them. They are sitting in the inbox waiting for a response that will arrive after they have already called someone else.
