Businesses that respond within 5 minutes are 21 times more likely to qualify the lead

July 08, 2026

21 times.

That is the difference in lead qualification probability between a business that responds to a new enquiry within 5 minutes and one that responds after 30. Not 21% better. 21 times. The research is from a joint study by InsideSales.com and MIT, covering over a million sales leads, and it has been independently replicated across multiple industries and countries.

The number is striking enough that it is worth unpacking what it actually means.

A service business receiving 30 web enquiries per month. At current response time of two hours, the business has meaningful qualifying conversations with roughly 7 of them. 23% of the total.

If the same business cut response to under 5 minutes, the 21x multiplier is not a mathematical prediction you can apply directly to get 147 qualifying conversations from 30 leads. Probability cannot exceed 100%. What it means in practice is that the sub-5-minute business is reaching prospects at the moment of intent and having very different conversations than one reaching them two hours later.

A realistic scenario for this business: 5-minute response, 65% reach-and-qualify rate = 20 meaningful conversations from 30 leads. At their existing 30% close rate from qualified conversations: 6 jobs per month instead of 2. At £580 average job value: £3,480 per month vs £1,218.

The underlying reason is behavioural. A prospect submitting an enquiry is, at the moment of submission, fully engaged with their need. They are present, their intent is high, and they are open to a conversation. At 2 hours, they are in a meeting, they are cooking dinner, they have mentally filed the enquiry in a "I'll get round to it" category. The moment has closed.

The 5-minute window does not require a person to be sitting at a screen waiting. It requires a system.
