70% of customers will leave a review if you ask them
70%.
That is the proportion of customers who say they will write a review if asked, according to BrightLocal's annual Consumer Review Survey, a figure that has remained consistent across multiple years of research.
The average service business completing 40 jobs per month and relying on spontaneous reviews generates between 2 and 5 reviews per month. That means somewhere between 35 and 38 satisfied customers said nothing about their experience publicly, because nobody asked them to.
The practical implication is significant. A business with 40 monthly completions and a 70% response rate to review requests could reasonably expect, accounting for unreachable customers and those who agree in principle but do not follow through, somewhere between 18 and 26 new reviews per month. In a year, that is 216 to 312 new reviews compared to the 24 to 60 they would accumulate without asking.
The volume matters for two separate reasons.
First, Google's algorithm weights businesses with higher review counts in local search ranking. A business with 350 reviews ranks above an otherwise equivalent business with 30 reviews.
Second, the spontaneous review sample systematically misrepresents the customer base. Dissatisfied customers review unprompted at a higher rate than satisfied ones. The unsolicited review pool therefore skews negative relative to actual experience. Asking for reviews from the full customer base corrects the sample and produces a rating that reflects reality.
The rating a business has is almost always lower than what a representative sample of its customers would give.
The review request does not need to be elaborate. A single text message sent 24 to 48 hours after a completed job, with a direct link to the review platform, is sufficient. The timing is the variable that matters most: the request sent when the experience is fresh and the customer's satisfaction is at its highest.
