How to audit your contact form for conversion friction
Most contact form drop-offs happen not because the prospect changed their mind, but because the form asked for too much or sent the wrong signal when the submission completed. These five checks take under ten minutes.
Check 1: How many required fields does it have?
Count the fields marked as required. The target is three or fewer: name, a contact method, and a brief description of the enquiry. Each additional required field reduces completion rate by approximately 5 to 10 percent. Remove any field where the answer would not change how you respond to the enquiry in the first 24 hours.
Check 2: What does the confirmation message say?
Most forms show "Thank you for your message" or a similar vague confirmation. A useful confirmation message sets a specific expectation: "We will be in touch within [X hours]." Without that, the prospect does not know whether the form worked or when to expect a response. Uncertainty causes them to contact another business while waiting.
Check 3: Where does the submission go?
Open the form settings and check the recipient. If submissions go to a general inbox, no one person is responsible for acting on them. Connect the form to a specific named recipient, or to a CRM that creates an assigned task or notification automatically.
Check 4: Is there an auto-response?
An email sent immediately to the prospect, confirming the submission has arrived, serves two purposes: it confirms the form worked, and it creates the first contact before a competitor does. If your form has no auto-response, add one. This is typically a two-minute change in the form settings.
Check 5: How does it look on mobile?
Open the form on a phone. Check that all fields are visible, labels are readable, and the submit button is easy to press. Over 60 percent of service business enquiries arrive from mobile. A form that is difficult to complete on a phone is losing enquiries at the point of submission.
The highest-priority fix
If you failed only one check, fix that one. If you failed multiple, the auto-response (Check 4) has the highest immediate impact for the least effort.
