How to run a 90-day rating improvement campaign
A rating improvement does not require exceptional service that you are not already delivering. It requires a consistent process for collecting the evidence that good service already happened. These five steps produce a measurable change within 90 days.
Step 1: Calculate your current trajectory
Note your current star rating, your total review count, and how many reviews you have received in the last 90 days. Divide your total review count by the number of months your listing has been active to find your historical monthly average. If your last 90 days is running below that average, your rating is declining, not holding.
Step 2: Work out how many reviews you need
To estimate the reviews needed to reach a target rating, use the weighted average:
((current rating × current count) + (5 × new reviews)) ÷ (current count + new reviews) = target rating
Set the target rating and solve for new reviews. Example: 60 reviews at 4.1. Target is 4.6. Assuming new reviews average 5 stars: ((4.1 × 60) + (5 × N)) ÷ (60 + N) = 4.6. Solve for N: approximately 60 new reviews needed.
Step 3: Set a monthly collection target
Divide the reviews needed by three (for 90 days). That is the monthly target to hit. In the example above: 20 reviews per month.
Step 4: Set up an automated post-job request
A text message sent within an hour of job completion, with a direct link to your Google review page, is the most effective collection method. The message should come from a named sender, thank the customer by name, and contain only one link. Keep it short.
Step 5: Review weekly
Check the review count every Monday. If you are behind target after two weeks, check whether the request is firing correctly and whether the timing can be moved earlier in the post-job sequence.
